ONIRONAUTA is an achingly beautiful approach to the Republic of Cuba. The face of the Afro-Cuban poet Omar is a mirror of humanity. Walking through Havana on his walking stick, he reminisces about partings, lost loves, patriotism and state censorship. His mystical poetry takes us into a dimension where past, present and dream blur into an immersive journey. The poetry of the local Omar, combined with the observational 16mm images of everyday Cuban life, allows us to empathise with the complexity of life on the isolated island. In striking images, the film tells of eternal transience and a person’s fear of being invisible to others.
